Yes, I know it’s OLD news by now, but I’ve been a bit too busy to post on recent events. A few days ago the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards announced its Round 12 winners list, and I picked up a few. First, “Into the Abyss” took a runner-up in the Storyteller category (series and long fics):

No Rest for the Wicked Awards, Round 12, Runner-up (Storyteller)

Then, the Fandom Snowflake meta I did this year for “Seeing Red” and Spike got a Judges Choice (I suppose as an essay) :

Any number of other friends and familiar names were also recognized — including [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll, [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies, [livejournal.com profile] comlodge, [livejournal.com profile] blondebitz, [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy, [livejournal.com profile] snogged, [livejournal.com profile] dragonydreams, [livejournal.com profile] musesfool, and [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip — but for the moment I’ll snuggle in with my own pretties.

I was very pleased to be informed that “Dusk Over Pompeii” and “Phantom 309” have been nominated at the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards. (I suspect [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip.) Several other fine stories/authors have been nominated, so check it out … and add to it if you have any favorites, because the nominating period is still open.

My fic “Bitter From the Sweet” was recently nominated at [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards (the No Rest for the Wicked Awards). Now the same story has been nominated (by the same person, perhaps?) at Round 30 of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards.

I’m a little mystified that this story should receive such attention (especially more than a year later), but happy for the attention. Only, hey, folks, I do have other stories out there!

Yesterday I learned that “Bitter From the Sweet” has been nominated in the latest round at [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards (the No Rest for the Wicked Awards).

Much thanks to whoever submitted my story there!

As I indicated in my previous (quick) post, there’s a lot to catch up on. This will only touch on most of that, but here goes.

This morning I got notification that “Echoes from the Battleground” had taken a minor award at Round 8 of the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards.

No Rest for the Wicked Awards, Round 8 – Runner-Up, Best Gen

As usual, other familiar names can be seen at the list of winners here; in particular (for me), [livejournal.com profile] deird1, [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy, and [livejournal.com profile] jedibuttercup. Congratulations are due to them, and to anyone else a fanfic reader might recognize in the winners’ lists.

I was notified yesterday (by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip) that I’d won in a category of Round 7 of the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards. I checked, and sure enough:

No Rest for the Wicked Awards, Round 7 (Best Longfic)

(The banner says “Best Series”, but the Storyteller category also covers long fics, and “First Do No Harm” was just long enough to qualify.)

I note that [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (Gabrielle) took awards in several categories herself: Winner in I’ve Got You Under My Skin (Best Het) with “Come Pouring Down Unified”, and Runner-up in That Old Gang of Mine (Best Gen) with “Out of the Grey”. There are other familiar names as well ([livejournal.com profile] jedibuttercup is an old friend), and I urge everyone to go check the lists.

Well, surprise to me! Some of my stories are up for consideration at the latest round of the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards (including one I did with [livejournal.com profile] sroni) … and I got notification that “Otherwise a Perfect Sky” was ineligible because it had won in the I Will Remember You (Best Angst) category last year.

I didn’t know that! And they even made me a prize banner that recognized the ‘pairing’ in the story!

You can look here to see the nominees for the current round of this award.

If, as the saying goes, “Second Place just means First Loser,” then I’m a preeminent loser four times over.

With the announcement of the winners for the 2011 White Knight Awards, I found that I was in fact more loser than any other single person. I took runner-up in a total of four categories, in fact; only one other person took more than two.

In summary:

My story “How Wide the Gate” placed second in How? What? How? (crossovers, with LitGal winning that category), and World Without Shrimp (AU fic, with [livejournal.com profile] skargasm emerging as the winner).

Hungry Like the Wolf” placed second in Where Do We Go From Here? (Post-Season 7 stories, with [livejournal.com profile] baudown winning that one).

And, finally, “Whisper of a Moment” placed second in Epic Fic (with [livejournal.com profile] lusciousxander winning there).

Not to be forgotten, of course, is that [livejournal.com profile] sroni received her first fic award here, with “Something Old, Something New” likewise taking (what else?) runner-up in Yanni CD & a Bottle of Chianti (romantic fic).

Everyone is urged to go to the site, check out and read the winning stories, and congratulate the winning authors. Meanwhile, I will take what satisfaction I can in having finished second over everyone else.

Okay. We’re back home (after landing at the Next State Over, renting a car, and — eventually — spending twelve hours on the road), and I’m picking up my daughter this evening.

Meanwhile, I got the welcome news that the Gotta Have Faith Awards picked “Jasmine Tears” in two categories, as seen below. As always, check the site to see the other winners; as always, there is no shortage of familiar names.

— but this one isn’t mine.

It’s better.

[livejournal.com profile] sroni has been nominated in the Best AU section of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards for her Cordelia-as-Slayer story, “Queen’s Gambit”.

My first (and still most enthusiastic) fan has hit the big time!

I feels good.

When it rains, it verily pours. I’ve already commented on my recent nominations at the Gotta Have Faith Awards (October 14) and Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards (October 18). Now I have a new e-mail advising me of a slew of nominations at Round 9 of the Running With Scissors Awards. Whoever likes me, likes me a LOT.

Running With Scissors Awards, Round 9 – Nominee

This time, the list is longer. My cup runneth over, indeed! As is my standard statement when I receive nominations (but have I ever before been set up at three separate sites in the same month?), I urge everyone to go, check out all the stories nominated there, submit your own favorites for nomination, and cast your vote for the most deserving candidates.
aadler: (CK4)

Recent e-mail tells me that more of my stories have been submitted for awards, this time in Round 22 of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards.

I’ve been favored at SunnyD before, and it’s still welcome. According to my notification, “Jasmine Tears” was put forward in Best Angst, “Otherwise a Perfect Sky” in Best Characterization (for Tara), and “Family Skeletons” for Best Comedy.

As always, I urge everyone to go, check out the other nominees, nominate your own favorites, and vote when the time comes!

I haven’t posted much lately, beyond further ‘Retrofic’ entries (bringing to my LiveJournal those stories written before I came into LJ). So, the latest news, such as it is:

Personal Issues )

Fanfic Issues )

And that’s all. More as it arises.

I just got notification that I’ve been nominated in the 2010 round of the White Knight Awards. I got a couple of runner-up awards there in 2007, but nothing since. Now, “Whisper of a Moment” is listed among the nominees for Flying Buttress of Support (the category for stories where Xander has a significant role in a secondary/support category).

Other WKA nominees on my friends list include [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni, [livejournal.com profile] sam_arkand, [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple, [livejournal.com profile] waddis, [livejournal.com profile] deird1, [livejournal.com profile] snickfic, [livejournal.com profile] leni_ba, [livejournal.com profile] bastardsnow, and [livejournal.com profile] m_mcgregor.

Only time for a quick note, but I was happily informed that I picked up two awards from the last round of the Absence of Light Awards. Other winners can be seen here, and as is commonly the case, I find myself surrounded by excellent company.

Minor stuff since my last post.

I picked up a mild chest cold, which I expected to last for about a day, with another day before I felt back up to speed. The first part went about as expected, but recovery stretched out ridiculously: five days before I was ready to do anything except crash and sleep for twelve hours.

I was nominated at the Absence of Light Awards, right at the absolute end of the nominating period. Whoever submitted my name, thanks. That’s the good news. Bad news, my story — “Walking After Midnight” — was entered in Best Gen, a category that has me up against [livejournal.com profile] waddis’ “He’s No Jack Sparrow”. Heavy competition.

Absence of Light Awards, Round 3 (2010) - Nominated, Best Gen

One of the people on my team is on leave, and the other will soon be transferred to a field team. Meanwhile, another guy (who’s already been moved twice) is being housed with us. Sometimes I wish things would settle down for awhile.

Is it just me, or does the strip below make anyone else think of [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs?

The future is EVERYWHERE!

– Both the kayaking and the acerbic commentary. We don’t socialize anymore, but hers is still a singular voice.

Finally, a rec that doesn’t have anything to do with fanfic. “Girl Genius” (the link takes you to the first strip) is an online comic that has won numerous awards, including two Hugos. It has more than seven years’ worth of strips stored, and is updated three times a week. Funny, entertaining, and visually stunning (the first six months’ strips are mostly black-and-white, but it goes full-color thereafter), this is a delight.

I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve posted. It doesn’t really feel like I’m that busy, but every day has stuff that I have to take care of, and then I look around and it’s been over a week.

There are some personal projects — even aside from my *cough* slightly demanding work schedule — that I need to set as priority, but once I have a handle on that I really want to start writing again. I’ve done it before, as postings from prior deployments will indicate, but it’s a matter of getting my feet under me. Still 11-hour days, with occasional extra duty, and I know I can do more than I’m doing but I really don’t know where to get started.

Nonetheless, I can guarantee I’ll be posting a story within a week … because it’s already been written, I’m just holding it for a specific occasion. Once that’s been dealt with, it’ll be time to begin on whatever else I can do.

We’re doing our job over here, and it’s working. I wish I didn’t have to worry about my country falling apart before I can get back to it. Or being so forcibly altered that I’ll feel like an alien when I arrive.

[P.S.: I just got notice that “Family Skeletons” has been nominated at the Unlocked Awards”. This does not displease me. Check out the site, and be sure to nominate any stories you think deserving.]

Only time for a quick post, but a few days ago I was notified that the Fang Fetish Awards had posted its Round 10 winners; when I went to check it, I found that “Jasmine Tears” has been selected as runner-up in their category for Best General Fic (All Pairing), as seen in the following graphic:

Fang Fetish Awards, Round 10 – Best General Fic (All Pairings)

I’ll have more to say later, I hope, but this is just … nice.
aadler: (MutantEnemy)
Happily, I am informed that one of my stories was honored at the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards. Since that story predates my LJ days, I’m taking this occasion to post it here for the first time.

Meanwhile, congratulations to the other winners!
