Whoever you are, this is a reminder: I’m going to be almost totally out of touch for the next month. As in, if I’m able to get online TWICE between now and May 5th, it’ll be something of a miracle.

So, I’m sorry, I won’t be able to check whatever was remixed for me until I get back. Which also means I won’t be able to comment, and lavish all the praise and gratitude it will no doubt deserve.

For that, I’m sorry. I’ll try to make it up to you once I return.

Dear Remixer,

All my stories are now posted at AO3, but I think you’ll find them better sorted and easier to evaluate at this listing.

As you can see there, the hugest majority of my work takes place in the Buffy/Angel ’verse, but there are a few other fandoms available … and, you wouldn’t have had me assigned to you unless you had listed BtVS as one of the areas you were willing to tackle, so I have reason to hope I’ve given you enough to work with.

My biggest desire in a remix is to have someone jump in with gusto and turn an idea of mine into their story. I yearn for daring, boldness, aggressive treatment. I love good, solid action, but I also have a high regard for on-target character insights. I’m not especially enthusiastic for pairings, but as long as they serve the story — rather than the story being shaped to serve the pairing — I have no real problem there.

Attack it. Make a splash. Grab an idea like Captain Jack Sparrow taking over a ship.

And by all means, enjoy yourself a lot.

Dear Remixer,

I’ve been down this road before, and the results have always been interesting. This year, I hope, will be no exception.

Whichever story of mine you choose to remix, don’t be inhibited. Follow your impulses. Show me what REALLY should have been done with the idea. Set me back in my chair muttering, “Wow. Never thought of that.”

I’ve posted dozens of stories, and enjoyed most of them. The story you pick will be mine; the remix will be yours. Put your stamp on it.

Some of my stories are off-limits because they’re co-written with other people. Some can’t be touched because they themselves are remixes of stories by others. And, of course, there’s the safe story. Plus, my main site is a little short of update. Because of that, I’ve done a list of eligible stories (with brief descriptions), in the cut.

Eligible for Remix )

Aside from that, feel free. My own preference — obviously — is for genfic, but the whole point of a remix is to write the story you would have done if you’d had the idea first. Some of my stories include relationships, but most don’t, so if you want to add a ’ship, there’s usually room to squeeze one in.

Though I’ve written three remixes, I’ve only been remixed once myself, so I’m very interested in seeing what someone else would do with one of my ideas. Don’t feel constrained to follow my approach, style, or preferences; the fun part, for me, is seeing someone go in a direction that never occurred to me. [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08, at its core, is a celebration both of similarities (love of fanfic) and difference (where that love takes us). As far as I’m concerned, the only boundaries are in the remix rules. Past that, sky’s the limit.

I got my [livejournal.com profile] remix_redux assignment the other day. I was pleased to see that it was a) someone whose work was already known to me, and b) someone who has written almost totally in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the fandom with which I’m most familiar. I went on to download all of the works on the listed site (except for some that are extra-long, because I expect to be too busy the next couple of months to do justice to remixing a really lengthy fic), and read through them with an eye to which might be good candidates for someone with my perspective and approach.

I’ve made my selection, and am beginning the first step in any new story idea: letting it work its way through my awareness until I feel that I have a grasp on the concept of what I intend to write. This process could continue for years — and has done so — but I’ll give it no more than another day or so before I set to work. The story I chose is almost precisely the size of the shortest fic (except for drabbles) on my own site, and I’ve written as much as 5,000 words in a single day, so I feel confident that I can meet my commitment in the allotted time.

Yesterday I noted [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs’ open letter to whoever would be remixing her work, and apparently she was following the example of others she’d seen, so mine follows.

Dear Remixer:

Have fun.

Think originally. Go crazy. Follow the stated ideal of
[livejournal.com profile] remix_redux, and turn something of mine into the story you’d have written if you’d had the idea first. Play and enjoy.

And — as
[livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs herself has said in other circumstances — don’t forget to use eye protection.

Looking forward to the results,
