Seven Days of Self-Promotion Meme – Day 6

“I think that many of us like talking about our and linking to our work but are embarrassed to do so without excuse, so I am making us an excuse. Behold, the Seven Days of Self-Promotion Meme, inspired by another recent meme but with more categories, all obviously customizable as you see fit. Notice that the categories are very broad, so you can talk about your art or vids or meta or whatever if you don’t write fic.

The Days:
     1. Something old
     2. Something new
     3. Something you made for someone else
     4. Something you made just for yourself
     5. Something for a major fandom/pairing/character
     6.

Something for a minor fandom/pairing/character:

Again, where to begin? I love minor/secondary characters, and focused on them from the beginning of my Buffyfic career; in fact, the joke with my kids for the first few years was that I was a Buffyfic writer who never showed Buffy. Probably the most minor would be the girl who showed up in only one Buffy episode (“the Wish”), and didn’t even have a name, being identified in the credits only as ‘Asian Cordette’. The minor character I carried farthest would be the single-episode (“School Hard”) Sheila, who I’ve used substantially in three stories (“Come to My Window”, “Shadow and Substance”, and “… Than Meets the Eye”) and shown in cameos in two others (“Queen’s Gambit” — in a dream sequence — and “Echoes from the Battleground”). For that matter, “Come to My Window” featured only secondary characters, as did an unrelated fic years later that was built around Quentin Travers, Tara’s father, and an OC of my own invention.

Lots to choose from. Still, I have to settle somewhere.

Ultimately, I’m going with “Unbidden the Day”, which — at 17,500 words — was the largest story I ever devoted to a single minor character (Nancy Doyle, from the Buffy Season 3 episode “Earshot”). This was another story that was great fun, in that it was the result of a challenge — originally from me to sroni, but then I took it on myself — to produce a Mary Sue fic that still worked as a story. In “Unbidden the Day”, I went to considerable lengths to deliberately incorporate as many Mary Sue offenses as I possibly could, and then justify them and make the whole thing work as a plausible narrative. Lots of in-jokes, lots of over-the-top ‘characters’, and then a payoff-ending-resolution that was ultimately a little sad.

Seriously, if anyone ever cared enough to grant a title “King of Minor Characters”, I’d get the crown. We grab our fame wherever we can.
