Minor stuff since my last post.

I picked up a mild chest cold, which I expected to last for about a day, with another day before I felt back up to speed. The first part went about as expected, but recovery stretched out ridiculously: five days before I was ready to do anything except crash and sleep for twelve hours.

I was nominated at the Absence of Light Awards, right at the absolute end of the nominating period. Whoever submitted my name, thanks. That’s the good news. Bad news, my story — “Walking After Midnight” — was entered in Best Gen, a category that has me up against waddis’ “He’s No Jack Sparrow”. Heavy competition.

One of the people on my team is on leave, and the other will soon be transferred to a field team. Meanwhile, another guy (who’s already been moved twice) is being housed with us. Sometimes I wish things would settle down for awhile.

Is it just me, or does the strip below make anyone else think of liz_marcs?

– Both the kayaking and the acerbic commentary. We don’t socialize anymore, but hers is still a singular voice.

Finally, a rec that doesn’t have anything to do with fanfic. “Girl Genius” (the link takes you to the first strip) is an online comic that has won numerous awards, including two Hugos. It has more than seven years’ worth of strips stored, and is updated three times a week. Funny, entertaining, and visually stunning (the first six months’ strips are mostly black-and-white, but it goes full-color thereafter), this is a delight.

Congratulations on the nomination!

A friend pointed me at Girl Genius some time ago. I've always loved Phil Foglio. There's so much fun stuff going on in his backgrounds.

Quite a lot of xkcd seems to echo liz_marcs’ voice.

As noted already, the nomination is probably all I’ll get. Would you want to go up against “He’s No Jack Sparrow”?

As far as “Girl Genius” is concerned, I almost regretted getting caught up to date on it. Now, instead being able to barrel through the story, I have to wait for each new strip to come out, just like the common people.

As far as competition goes, I definitely see “He’s No Jack Sparrow” as the heavyweight in this category. If it wins another category or two, and the judges are reluctant to declare it the winner of everything, my odds might improve. Of course, that would still leave me competing against some solidly established authors …

I did that. Started from the beginning, and spent most of a week blasting through the accumulated strips. I actually encountered “Girl Genius” while I was in Afghanistan, but 1) the archive wasn’t as well developed at that time, and 2) the connection speed available to me then wasn’t adequate for catching up on years of content.

As I noted to waddis, the nomination is probably as far as the honor will go. Nice to be recognized even that much, though.

And now you’ve opened up an entirely new line of thought. I don’t even WATCH Doctor Who, and I can still absolutely see liz_marcs as a companion.

Doctor Who is one of those shows that's become so iconic that most people understand the references, even if they don't watch. But it's also lots of fun to watch!
