Back at ‘home base’
Mar. 30th, 2025 09:40 pmOver the last month Susan and I were in New Mexico, I was checking weather reports and trying to balance our travel schedule so we would arrive at our current location 1) in time for me to keep a couple of medical appointments, and 2) after the projected low temps were high enough for us to be solidly into spring weather.
We hit it pretty much perfect. Since we got here, there have been maybe two days that the overnight lows made it down to freezing, and those were barely at the freezing mark and for only a couple of hours, so we had no problems with our water line freezing. The last couple of days we’ve had to rely on air conditioning, which is a welcome change from what we went west this winter to avoid. There have been a few nippy days (and one with scattered rain all day long), but things have been clear enough overall for me to get back into taking a couple of 30-minute walks per day.
The RV park where we’re currently staying is one we’ve used before, once for a few days and then last year for the spring and most of the summer. It’s almost exactly twice the expense of the place we liked so much in Deming NM — that area was unusually low-cost — but it’s a nice, expansive area with plenty of paving and several welcome facilities. We keep re-using our favorite places, and this is one of them.
Every time I’m in a new park, I check out the different rigs available, just because I like to know these things. I’ve seen several Class B units since I arrived, though never more than two at a time, and it’s not at all unusual to find an actual truck camper setup (not right here right now); there are currently two classic Airstream rigs, and another of a different brand that was clearly inspired by Airstream. The only kind I’ve never seen anywhere is a pop-up camper … but that’s not surprising, we stay at RV parks rather than campgrounds, and a pop-up really is more luxury camping than RV living.
I’ve already been to the scheduled medical appointments; no problems on one, basic tests on the other and I’m waiting to hear the results. We plan to work more at reducing our two storage units to one (and maybe next year finish paring that down to nothing); in a couple of months we’ll be getting ready to make our intended China trip to welcome the new grandchild.
For now, this is where we are, and it’s good enough.
