Fandom Snowflake Challenge #15
Do a fandom wrap. Leave a comment here saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Your top 5 fandoms for 2023 were: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (fic writing), MCU Avengers (watching, reading), then — all watching — Star Trek: Lower Decks, Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon.
Your top 5 fandom spaces for 2023 (Discord, Twitter, etc.) were: Livejournal, Dreamwidth, Ao3, and after that it was whatever came up.
Your top 5 things you did to contribute to fandom in 2023 were: 1] wrote 4 fics (3 BtVS/A:tS, 1 original-TV Mission: Impossible), 2] participated in
summer_of_giles for the 10th time, 3] wrote 4 drabble-set collections based off my own Backstage stories, 4] created a BtVS icon (the one I used for this post), 5] left occasional comments on stories by occasional fic writers.
Your top 5 most appreciated fandom contributions were: same as above.
Bonus questions
Your fandom personality in 2023 was (i.e., Fandom Eeyore, Twitter Refugee, Discord Party Animal, etc.): I have no idea what any of those things are, and I’m not about to make one up to try and show how cool I am.
In 2023, you discovered: South Korea is becoming a fairly reliable source of quality rom-com series, and probably larger movies as well; Disney is getting worse and worse, to the point where I haven’t even bothered to watch the last few Marvel entries; I’m one of the ‘old guys’ that nobody actually pays attention to anymore.
Your fandom home in 2023 was: primarily Livejournal for writing, primarily Dreamwidth for interacting (because so many people left LJ for DW over some largely meaningless political issue), primarily Archive of Our Own for reading.
I expected the last challenge to be the one that’s cropped up so many times before: “Create your own challenge.” I was ready to respond, Read ME. I’ve got a big enough body of work to be worth checking out. I loved the days when I was more deeply involved in fandom activities, and have felt some regret at falling behind because the active stuff has moved to other platforms and I’m not willing to chase recognition. In the end, it’s not that big a deal. I like interaction and involvement, I love feedback … but I write fanfic because I enjoy doing that, and will keep doing it for as long as I keep enjoying it. More would be nice, but I don’t actually need more.
So, another Snowflake year done. Hope everybody had a good time.

Date: 2024-01-30 12:29 am (UTC)I loved the days when I was more involved, too. I hope you keep writing. I marked one of your longer stories "to be read later" at AO3 but I don't know if I'll be able to follow it. I only know the canon for NCIS, Veronica Mars, and season one of Buffy. Probably not enough.

Date: 2024-01-30 08:56 pm (UTC)In general, the Backstage Stories don’t contradict canon, but 1) add things that canon didn’t have, and 2) build on other Backstage stories. The two Queenverse stories are in a separate AU, but have crossed with Backstage. The Independent stories are standalones, frequently veering wide of canon and having nothing to do with each other. (And, of course, the Otherfandom stories are non-BtVS.)
