I remember a line, I think from one of Dick Francis’s books, to the effect that the sound of scientific discovery isn’t an exultant “Eureka!”, but a pensive “Well, that’s funny …”

By the same token, the announcement of civil war may not be a strident “The rebellion has begun!”, but a much quieter “You’re about to push us too far, and you won’t like it if you do.”
