You’re applying for the fanfic writer of the year award. What five fanfics do you put in your portfolio?
I didn’t have to think more than a moment to know the answers to this one. My five choices:
“Point of Focus”. My first Buffyfic, an award winner, and — even apart from being a strong start in my new avocation — a solid, effective story in itself. Yes, I’m tooting my own horn a bit, but I’m also explaining why I picked this one of my stories over other of my stories, and that’s the reason.
“Solitaire Till Dawn”. At that point, the best thing I’d done. Surreal narration, lurid and intense action sequences, and an absolute stunner of an ending. Check it out if you don’t believe me.
“First Do No Harm”. A perennial favorite, for many reasons. Fun, and funny, and some biting commentary along the way. Mostly, though, fun and funny.
“Otherwise a Perfect Sky”. My best and most effective remix. I previously described a story that came to me, complete, in a dream, and it wasn’t this one … but it might as well have been, because the whole story was there for me from the moment I decided on which story I was going to remix. Sometimes it really is that easy.
“Into the Abyss”. My most recent ‘big’ story, an idea I’d been playing with in my head for years before attempting, and then jumped onto when I finally felt I was ready. The final scene was a sledgehammer, and I had the last two paragraphs already solid in my mind before I ever began the story.
So, there we are. The listing is chronological rather than by quality, but there IS a rough increase in quality over the timeline. If this had been for six stories, I would have included “In Ev’ry Angle Greet” (I ousted it to make room for “Solitaire Till Dawn”), but I stand by the top five.
And, though I didn’t plan it that way, I note that all the above-named are part of my Backstage Series (canon-compliant), not an Independent among them. How about that?
And that’s all!
