I just happened to note that nearly two-thirds of the stories I’ve written since I did my first remix, have been remixes; and further, that two-thirds of the stories I’ve done in (roughly) the past two years, have had a strong relationship component. These are trends rather than ruts … but when did I fall so solidly into those trends that they could be mistaken for ruts?

I think we all have recurring motifs. There's nothing wrong with that. As a writer, there are always going to be things that inspire you most.

I don’t mean I disapprove of, or am disappointed in, what I’ve been doing (though a higher proportion of original fic to remixes would certainly be desirable). From my beginning as a ficcer, however, I’ve always made a point of trying to not keep doing the same thing, over and over. When I find myself repeating a point too much (different ways vampires can wind up with souls? alternate realities that come to a tidy end to bring us back to the original reality? or even, too many Cordelia fics in a row?), I try to leaven it with something that takes a different tack.

(This doesn’t count surprise twist at the end?. I think that’s a good thing, and will work it in whenever I can.)
