I was awakened about 7:50 AM by a WeChat text from Mei-li asking about my health and if we needed to call an ER. I replied that the feet seemed better but I was awaiting my wife’s morning assessment. Susan woke only a few minutes later, and her judgment was the same as mine: some (small) improvement, no need for emergency treatment at this point.

Susan offered to go to McDonald’s for our breakfast, but I made the trip instead, in the belief that the walking would be good for me. (Nor was it a problem, whether or not it served as a benefit.) We had thought that today would be like last Sunday — Kevin picking us up in time for 2:00 PM Mass — ans so were planning our day along those lines. Instead I got a WeChat notice from him about 9:50 that they were on their way, and I had to scramble to shower and shave and dress (hadn’t bothered for the walk to McD’s), and when he arrived I was still pulling together the stuff I planned to take with us.

I had found some thin socks in his dresser that I could wear with a pair of slip-on dress shoes, and so I went on and was basically dressed as if for church, though I tucked a change of casual clothes (shorts and t-shirt) into my backpack. We rode to the Yins’ with him and Logan; while I waited for the lunch they would serve us toward noon, I finally finished “Gone Girl”. (And was a little disappointed; near the end, I ran into some things I hadn’t seen in the movie, and was hoping for a more definite resolution, but it didn’t go there.) Okay; I should ever do so well with fiction of my own.

During yesterday’s restaurant meal, I had shown that I was partial to garlic, and the Yins were of the opinion that this was an aid to health, so in today’s lunch they had actually put out a small dish of garlic for me. (Fine; I munched a few as solo snacks, stirred others into my rice-and-stuff.) Mei-li swears you can’t get fat on Chinese food, but at the same time she seems determined to prove herself wrong in my case; we eat good meals at their table.

Everyone except Kevin and me lay down for the standard nap after lunch; I don’t remember what he was doing, but I was mainly reading online using the phone he’d provided me. Then when I abruptly remembered our plans and asked when we should be getting ready for Mass, he realized he’d lost track of time and there was only ten minutes before it would begin and that would involve waking everyone … he decided to let this one pass, and with that I went and joined Susan to do a little dozing myself.

I got up, Susan had already been out for awhile, we did some baby-juggling and -worshipping. (She’s such a delightful little girl, and very even-tempered, though she never has the opportunity to cry because someone is always seeing to her at every single moment.) At the evening meal I asked for beer; Susan had observed last night that she wished she could pop me with some Lasix as a diuretic, and beer has a similar if lesser effect on me, so I thought it was worth a try.

(On the Yins’ television, I keep seeing news items with Kim Jong Un. I seriously hope he can do as much to improve the world as his father did … and soon, if possible.)

Mei-li and Laura took us back to Kevin’s apartment at 8:00 PM — though we naturally didn’t arrive till 8:20 — and after a few minutes to settle in, I had Susan check my pulse again. This time, 61 beats-per-minute, a substantial improvement from last night.

Eventually Susan fell asleep on the couch in the living room (after demurring when I suggested she remove to the bedroom), and I was in bed myself by 11:00 PM.
