Seventh day in China [October 7]
I thought I had slept in way late, but when I got up it was 8:30, basically a normal night’s sleep from when I had gone to bed. (Susan was already up, of course.) Somewhat before 10:00, Mei-li texted to see how we were doing and if we needed anything. Susan was determined to rest from yesterday, so we said we were fine for now.
Around 1100, Susan wanted to get a bit of cash to replace what we’d passed over to Kevin (which, of course, had originally come from him), so we went downstairs and down the block to the Bank of China, where she was able to use her ATM card to withdraw ¥600 (just under $95 U.S.). Then we crossed the place and found a place called Kung Fu, which Kevin had described as the local equivalent of McDonald’s in terms of fast-food with basic Chinese dishes, and — as I had done in my own outing to an actual McDonald’s — selected, ordered and paid for a pair of meals by pointing, holding up the right number of fingers, and nodding or shaking our heads as the situation seemed to indicate.
The food was actually somewhat more substantial than I would think of for ‘ordinary’ fast food; Susan couldn’t even finish hers, and mine certainly filled me up. Noticing the time, Susan wondered — since the classes Kevin teaches are in this area — if he might try to call on us during his lunch hour. She gave me her money and left to return to the apartment, in case he came by; I stayed to finish my meal, and when I was done with that I stopped in at the Walmart to pick up some things she had mentioned wanting.
She’d been right; when I got back to the apartment, Kevin was already there. And, I learned, he’d been there half an hour before his mother arrived. In fact, he was becoming alarmed and upset, because when he tried to call us he could hear the phone ringing inside (I’d forgot to take it with us), and he told me to never leave without the phone. So, okay.
He ordered lunch delivered for himself — from the same Kung Fu, as it happens — because he didn’t have to return to his classes till after 2:00 PM. That took longer than expected to arrive, but he was able to finish it before time to go.
Susan watched television and read from her iPad, I did some online reading and transcribed some of the composition I’d done on my current fanfic. A bit before 8:00 PM I walked down to the KFC across the street and got something for the two of us. The problem is that Susan is very sensitive to spicy food; anything that even suggests hot will burn her throat. I got original-recipe chicken for her (worked out fine), a sandwich for myself (also benign; I can get one of those for her on some other occasion), and a small box of popcorn chicken for us to split (which was spicy, and she had to quit after a few pieces). Oh, well.
Susan, still a little tired from yesterday, went to bed early. I followed at 10:00 PM.
