Remix archive is open!

The stories in this year’s Remix Redux are now open for reading. I of course went immediately to see what had been done for me, and I wasn’t disappointed.

“One to Go” re-interprets my story “Into the Abyss”, in ways that excite the imagination. Shorter, focusing on the essentials rather than on the peripheral issues that gradually became prominent themes in my own story, this nonetheless introduces two departures that both work, and work well. Seriously, as soon as I finished it I was wishing I had written this one myself, because then I could go in and explore all the lovely possibilities that had been opened up.

I’ve had mixed results over the years (though considerably better luck the last few). No reason to complain this time out.

Thanks for pointing out this story. I really wondered how anyone could remix Into the Abyss, but this remix uses its brevity and this relationship between Dawn and Jane to great effect. Really good stuff.

It’s things like this that make remixes so interesting. If I had done the job my remixer did (deird1, we now know), I would have felt that I had failed to follow out on the potential that was there. Since I had already done that, however, “One to Go” can serve as a quite acceptable — and interesting, and entertaining — alternative. A companion piece, as my “Long Time Passing” was to velvetwhip’s “Civilian”, or even my “Otherwise a Perfect Sky” to deird1’s own “ Come Crashing Down ”.

Remixes are fun.

I generally take more pleasure from the remixes I write than the ones I receive (mainly because I enjoy writing them so much.) Sometimes I do get lucky, though.
