Well, I got my wish. Unit drill almost always takes place on the first full weekend of the month, but because Columbus Day (Monday 9th) is a federal holiday, this month’s drill won’t take place until next weekend. That gives me an additional week to work on my fitness.

That’s good; what isn’t good is that I didn’t do any further work on “God Save the Queen”. Still, I’ve been adjusting my schedule to facilitate more time available for work, and I’ll start utilizing some of it tomorrow.

Open Cut — Personal Stuff

The college where my son has been attending Catholic campus ministry is in the city where he lives, but he’s actually taking classes at a community college thirty miles away. Well, yesterday a CCM chapter was organized for his own college … and, because of his willingness and recent level of activity, he was elected president. (He asked if anyone else recognized the irony of a non-Catholic being president of something like that, but apparently his current commitment is more important than the fact that he hasn’t completed the process of entering the Church.)

I had dinner last night with my stepsister, during which she mentioned that she was going to start asking if anyone had a kitten for which they wanted to find a home. I promptly volunteered the two that Susan has been keeping. This might sound like presumption on my part, but Susan was delighted when I called to let her know about it.

That was when she told me about our son’s CCM presidency … and she also mentioned that her parents (who have become aware that I’m around a lot lately) had asked her, "So, will you two be getting married again?" They had never liked me, though they always behaved civilly to my face, but they seem to share Susan’s feeling that I’ve changed in the years since the marriage’s end. She told them she didn’t know, but that she was doing a lot of thinking and praying about it.

Close Cut

I’ll do my reenlistment next weekend, as soon as I’ve completed the APFT, and meanwhile I’ll be cashing out the special 10%-interest-bearing account I opened for Army savings while I was overseas. (It ceased to draw interest three months after my return.) That, plus my reenlistment bonus, will provide me with enough to live for two years with careful budgeting — I’ve made it for five months on the extra I had collected in my regular checking account — but I still hope to be attending DLI by then.

So. Life continues.
