Catching up a little more
Different stuff:
My Reserve unit had an APFT this past weekend, and it was the first in years when I didn’t have to fast for two or three days in order to stay under my maximum allowed weight. Granted, I just barely made it, but I didn’t have to take any extreme measures to bring that about, I was already there. In the physical events, I did 84% on push-ups, 94% on sit-ups (60% is passing for both), and finished my 2½-mile walk six minutes faster than needed to pass. (There’s no percentile on an alternate event, you either pass or not … but I passed at a level for soldiers 35 years younger than I am.)
Last year, my wife arranged for the local Elks lodge to host the summer Family Day event. She said afterward she heard a lot of complaints from people about the lodge’s inadequacies … but, this year, the same people want to return there, and have asked her if she can negotiate a lower price.
My over-the-road training is almost complete. One more week will give me the requisite hours, then I’ll return to the main terminal for a brief skills test, then I’ll start drawing conventional assignments. It’s been nearly ten years since I worked for anybody but the Army; I’ll have to re-accustom myself to being a civilian and a wage-earner at the same time.
I finished my last segment of “Reversible Error”, and now only sroni’s remaining parts keep the story from being ready to post. And, as I predicted, my Hunger Games fic — “A Breath on the Embers” — is now posted HERE.
More new stuff as it arises and I get to it.

Maybe, if I lose just a bit more weight, I’ll be able to train myself up to running again, instead of the 2½-mile walk I’ve been using as an alternate event. Or, I might just have to accept that age runs in only one direction, and that I’ve already maintained that particular aspect of fitness for as long as it was possible to do so, and that I should focus on keeping myself in shape for the things I can still do.
