A little after 9:30, Kevin and Mei-li’s father showed up to get us. Kevin brought us a McDonald’s breakfast, which we had to eat quickly before starting off because there is no eating in the car (and I don’t know if that’s local Chinese custom or a Yin family edict). We went to the Yins’ apartment building, and there split into two cars: me and Kevin and Mr Yin in one, Susan and Mei-li and Mrs Yin in the other.

We drove to a place called Overseas Chinese Town East, a sort of giant theme park. There were few actual rides, and we didn’t do any of them; it was more a matter of cool stuff and more cool stuff, scenic views and … well, it was just nice all day. I doubt I saw half a dozen other Westerners all day, but that really didn’t matter.

Long day, short entry, because there was more stuff to see than I have the memory to describe. We drove back to the city, parked at the Yins’ apartment building again … and they took us out to yet another restaurant. Again the huge, overwhelming array of dishes, again delicious stuff prepared and combined in ways I can’t begin to understand, but all good. Again Mr Yin got us going on the baijiu, a small bottle for each of us. I held even with him the first night, drew a limit on the second; tonight, I didn’t even try, I had just under half my bottle and shared the rest with him after he’d finished his.

Another ride back to Kevin’s apartment, another bedtime. Five days here. Not getting homesick yet.

Next Day
