Where things stand
Jul. 4th, 2007 03:40 pmFor awhile I was too busy to check in to LJ, either to post or to read. This will bring it all up to date.
Saturday I did the five-mile Marine fence-line run, and despite the hills I finished the course in under an hour. (As a benchmark, one of my teammates, in his late twenties and himself a former Marine, beat my time by only five minutes.) I spent the remainder of that day and the next resting and writing — and then, Monday and yesterday, was too busy to take time for exercise — but returned this morning to my regular running routine.
“Queen’s Gambit” continues to grow steadily. This could turn into one big story; I’ve done nearly 6,000 words, and am still on page 2 of a 34-page draft by
sroni. I spent yesterday evening just keying in what I’ve composed so far, and I’ll post the first part where she (but only she) can see and offer comment on what I’m doing with her initial work.
Over the weekend I spoke to Susan, and went over the options currently open to me for choice, following this tour at Guantanamo. She said it was my choice to make, and she would do whatever was necessary to deal with whatever direction I took. In our first marriage we didn’t do too well when I made all the decisions, and worse when I abdicated that responsibility to her; I really would prefer that we address major issues together this time through, and this one clearly affects us both, so I plan for us to discuss it further. On the positive side, she didn’t again raise the possibility of postponing our remarriage, past the implicit recognition that our plans could be delayed if I’m back on active-duty orders the moment I return to the States.
Also during the weekend past, somebody somewhere got drunk and did something stupid. I don’t know the details, but am still stuck with the results: in keeping with the standard military practice of penalizing all the people who didn’t screw up, along with slamming the actual offenders, our duty hours have been expanded by half an hour on either side. A minor annoyance that makes it just a bit more difficult to keep up with all the after-hours obligations I’ve set myself. I’ll adapt, and the necessity for making adjustments may even bring about some improvements. I just wish I didn’t have to.
Finally, of course, today is July 4th. We have the day free, and I’m still getting accustomed to being in a theater where they give time off for holidays. There’s supposed to be a fireworks display this evening; I may go, I may not. I still have to take care of my day’s allotment on “Queen’s Gambit”, and then it’s back to work for tomorrow.
For everyone who still thinks America is a good thing, Happy Independence Day. Anyone else … well, we really don’t have much to say to each other, do we?
