After I made my post day before Monday the 3rd, I added 1,000 words to the draft of my [livejournal.com profile] remix_redux story before going to bed. Yesterday, however, was nowhere near so productive.

It was a long day. Not hard, but it went on and on. All paperwork processing, the stuff you have to satisfy before you can start an official deployment, and none of it arduous; it started at 6 AM, though, and lasted until 5 PM. Then we were in a hurry to get to dinner, because there had been no break for lunch, and after that we just crashed for awhile. Actually, I put in a call home, and talked for over an hour with Susan and our son. There are things going on in her life right now that could be a problem down the road, but for the moment she’s doing well.

Today was easier. Because of our ultimate destination, SSG Vega and I didn’t have to go through the same stuff as everyone else, so we used the day to relax and catch up on minor issues. (Like trying to get an official memo excusing us from taking with us a couple of duffels’ worth of gear we’ll never use.) Even though there wasn’t much to it, we did a certain amount of moving around, so it was early evening before I had the opportunity to settle into time for myself.

I made good use of that, though. With the writing I got in, I’m now over 5,000 words for my [livejournal.com profile] remix_redux story. I’m past the point that had me worried that I might hit a block, and now I’m into areas that will go smoothly and easily. I still don’t know how long it will be ― a story turns out to be as long as it wants to be ― but I now am confident that I’ll finish within the deadline, even with the other things in my life right now.

I got an unexpected call from my favorite stepsiser. She told me she’s due to give birth in October.

I miss my daughter. I hate the thought that I’ll be away when she does her brief visit home. But we’re both doing what we want to do, and both willing to accept the cost.

I haven’t even gotten to the fun part of this tour of duty yet, and already I’m enjoying myself immensely.

I love my life. I totally love it.
