That Fandom Meme

This meme has been going around for awhile. I don’t know where it originated — I’ve seen postings from

First TV show fandom I had self-insertion fantasies about: That would have been the Marvel superhero ’verse. I strongly identified with Scott Summers, and then later (and to a lesser extent) with Peter Parker. My first fanfic per se — in the days before, as I’ve previously noted, the term ‘fanfic’ itself was developed — was deliberate and unapologetic self-insertion in the original STAR TREK. Those stories predated the Internet, and so have never appeared online.
First fandom in which I interacted (online and in person) with other fans: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, no question. That show/fandom was my introduction to fanfic itself, in the ‘modern’ world, and it’s been a merry-go-round ride of so many different kinds of fun. Including literally raising sroni in fanfic lore and practices.
Pairing in the first slash fanfiction I read: I don’t read slash. On the other hand, I read yahtzee63, who occasionally wrote/writes slash, so probably something in the Angel/Lindsay category. Anything by
yahtzee63 is worth reading … but in the end, slash is still slash, and I just don’t see the point.
First fanfiction I read that made me think, “YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I’d like to write …”: Once again, yahtzee63, with “In Harm’s Way”. I was really struck by how well the characters’ voices were captured, and I’ve been trying to emulate that example ever since.
Pairing in the first fanfiction I wrote: I don’t really focus much on pairings; some stories may include them, or even be explicitly about them, but it’s a very occasional thing. On the other hand, my first fanfic hinted that at one time Slayer!Joyce might have been briefly involved with Ethan Rayne (and it ended badly, and he was dead in the aftermath). That’s as close as I got … that, and — at the very end — Xander being in the opening stages of a sex-dream about Cordelia, but I cut out before things got juicy.
First OTP: Don’t have one. Having said that, I am definitely sympathetic toward the idea of Buffy/Xander. (She needs him, and he deserves her, but I’m not convinced that he deserves the baggage she would bring into a relationship.) On the other hand, if one counts fannish impressions even before active involvement in fandom, I was powerfully struck by the tribulations of Thomas Magnum and Michelle Hue (Magnum, P.I.): it was as if those two were fated to be together, but equally fated to be denied such an ending except perhaps in another life.
First RPS/F OTP: I don’t even know what that means. I could probably find out easily enough, but first I’d have to care enough to try. And, if it has anything to do with slash, I already care enough to avoid finding out.
First fannish friend I met in person: I’m fairly sure that would be honorh, at the first WriterCon. Liquor was involved (this was at the hotel/casino bar). I got the sense that she was unimpressed, but I enjoyed the meeting nonetheless.
First character I formally roleplayed: Never have, unlikely that I ever will. I read and write fanfic, and occasionally have online discussions regarding fanfic or fandoms — and, twice, attended WriterCon — but neither my interests nor my activities extend further than that. On the other hand, going to a convention was never in my original set of intentions, so if anything new comes up, it’s possible that I might give it a whirl. Just hasn’t happened yet.
