Dead days at JTRC

The days go on, and nothing happens. I’m more comfortable than during my stints at the National Training Center — here at the Joint Readiness Training Center, rather than being out in the field carrying out simulated missions, I’m working in an office supporting the simulation — but I’m horrendously bored.

Also unlike at NTC, I’m not getting any writing done. I have an approach in mind that might change things (I’ll see tomorrow), but so far, nothing.

And, the co-worker I was talking about, who disagreed with me politically but was so carefully analytical and determinedly inoffensive that it was a pleasure to share arguments with him? He’s still soft-spoken and inoffensive, but I’m coming to the conclusion that his thinking isn’t that deep. He puts a lot of thought into framing and raising issues, but having done so, his imagination turns off and he just falls back on tired liberal conclusions … and seems genuinely to believe that he’s scored some telling point, rather than having his ‘argument’ trail off into confusion and unintelligibility.

Besides which, we’re spending seven hours a day doing maybe ninety minutes’ worth of work. And sitting around doing nothing the rest of the time.

Okay, I’m being paid for this silliness. But, damn, I’m bored.
