I’ve continued my revision of “God Save the Queen”, turning out copy a bit at a time, slow but ongoing. I actually took comfort from the problems I was having, because of their source: I could tell that something wasn’t right, and needed to figure out just what it was before I could really get into gear. To wit, I was beginning to feel the story, and past experience told me that this was a definite positive step.

Well, yesterday I took my ex-wife to a professional meeting, and sat out in a mall parking lot writing in longhand while waiting for her to finish. When she was done, we stopped in at a restaurant for dinner … and, between ordering and receiving our meal, my mind clicked into what had been missing, and now I have the story. It won’t even involve changing that much, but the change will accentuate and focus the points that were being aimed for from the beginning. Much still remains to be done, but now I know what I’m doing.

Ever since I first heard about it, I’ve wanted to participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, for the few who don’t already know it). It’s only a few days away … and I won’t be able to do it this time, I still owe work to [livejournal.com profile] sroni, and I don’t feel it’s fair to take a month off just at the moment when things finally are moving for me. (Also, there’s the fact that I’m still hoping for a November slot at DLI, but that’s a consideration rather than a reason.)

I’ll be heading back upstate this afternoon, and upon arriving I’ll try to settle into heavy writing mode. Even though I haven’t done anything with it yet, I’m ridiculously happy at having found the proper focus of the story. I’m ready to run now.
