(no subject)
Oct. 18th, 2006 03:52 pmNow that I’ve finished the APFT (and I won’t have another for six months or my arrival at one school or another), my body seems to have relaxed, and I’m now running at the 70% level. As long as I continue to work out a minimum of three times a week, I should keep improving, so that the next such test will be easy.
My re-enlistment got put off a few times, as some of the paperwork was being held up by people in Atlanta, but it finally went through. I got the call, I reported, was duly sworn in … and my commander took me directly to his office and filed the request to get me into DLI (November slot) while I watched. Could it really happen that quickly? I’d best kick into gear in getting my possessions packed (some for storage, some for moving). No guarantees, but ready is always better than not.
As I promised, I did some work yesterday on my revision of “God Save the Queen”. Not a lot — barely 400 words — but the amount doesn’t really matter as much as that I stay at it. The original story was less than 9,000 words, so a steady 400 a day would have me doubling the story size in a little over three weeks.
Thoughts on Heroes
Yesterday on her LJ,
yahtzee63, evaluating Niki’s latest activities, wondered if having a split personality actually qualified as a power. Personally, I think there’s a lot more to it than that — Niki observed that one of the men in her garage had been torn in half, which certainly implies enhanced strength — but after reflecting on some of the things I saw the other night, I have a different and somewhat disturbing theory.
The tattoo we saw on her shoulder. She had said her husband always had members of his crew wear a ring with that design, right? And she’s marked with it. And he’s gone, nobody knows where.
What if the other personality inside her isn’t her at all? What if it’s him? What if that’s where he hid out after ripping off Linderman?
Think about it. Her alter-ego knew where the bodies were buried. Her alter-ego had arranged a second car in her name without her conscious knowledge. And, in dealing with the thug in the elevator, her alter-ego calmly promised dire consequences if the man ever again threatened ‘our son’. That last could indicate both-parents-in-one-body just as easily as it could mean a secret self who just happens to be savage, ruthless, and super-strong.
(Also, has anybody else noticed that Mohinder’s perky neighbor keeps putting him on the right track, almost as if she were steering him?)
Close Cut
I’m supposed to have lunch with my youngest brother tomorrow, and I think I’ll probably head downstate early Friday, to spend the weekend with my son and ex-wife. Meanwhile, more writing to be done.
