So, recent developments.

Open Cut — Miscellaneous news

I did my two-mile run today forty seconds faster than necessary to qualify, the first time that’s happened since I returned from Afghanistan. It was under unusually favorable circumstances, but is still encouraging. Three weeks and change before I have to get my APFT score recorded, but now I have solid reason to believe I’ll make it.

I’m visiting my son and ex-wife again, will stay for most of a week; then it’ll be time to call on the Russian lady again (for either the last or next-to-last time before I leave for DLI), with my unit drill beginning the following day, and a picnic for unit member families on Sunday. Then I’ll have two weeks to make arrangements for the relocation to Monterrey for the DLI assignment.

Close Cut

Day before yesterday I finished my first revision on Part I of “God Save the Queen”. I’ll start on Part 2 tomorrow, and post Part 1 where [livejournal.com profile] sroni can evaluate my work so far. Once I’ve done that for the whole story, even if she isn’t yet finished offering counter-suggestions, I can finally move on to revising “Queen’s Gambit”. “God Save the Queen” is and has always been [livejournal.com profile] sroni’s story, so I feel some of the same hesitation in taking liberties with it that I experienced when recommending changes to one of [livejournal.com profile] agilebrit’s fics. “Queen’s Gambit”, on the other hand, is one that [livejournal.com profile] sroni plotted out with my feedback, and for which she produced a first draft on the understanding that it would be a collaborative effort. Once I get my teeth into that one, I’ll really cut loose.

By the time I’m done with the second story, I should be at DLI already, and my studies and other duties will leave me with quite a bit less time for fanfic production. I still intend to do some writing, though. I overdid it while I was in Afghanistan; ten stories in ten months means I wasn’t giving my duties the attention they deserved, and I don’t want to repeat that. Still, it seems to me that I should be able to manage three or four stories a year without neglecting anything important.

Life goes on, and I’m going with it.

Yay, on making the qualifying time.

From personal experience I can tell you Agilebrit is very open to constructive input. :) I look forward to reading Queen's Gambit.
