Ireland/China 2025, continuing (59)
Aug. 8th, 2025 11:28 pmForty-ninth day in China – August 8 Friday
I was up maybe 9:00AM, Susan moving already. We got a light breakfast, moved on with the day. It was almost 2:00PM before I went to McDonald’s to get our lunch.
Susan was still having a lot of back pain (she’s beginning to think it might be a kidney stone), but she didn’t say anything about staying in this time. We headed over at 6:00PM; on arriving, we found that Mei‑li and Ruby and the nanny were there as well as Amber. Nice supper from Logan — as usual, but this time there were two plates of Chinese dumplings, which we love — and then we settled in to wait for Kevin.
While we were waiting, I gave Amber one of the unit patches from my Army service. I hadn’t even brought it as a gift, just found it in one of the pockets of a suitcase, and offered it as something she might like. She did, so that’s done.
It was nearly 8:45PM before Kevin got in and started on the meal that had been set aside for him. By then, it was time for Susan and me to go back to our apartment; he agreed, however, to take me to the bank tomorrow. (I’m down to ¥400, which isn’t much over $50 American. We could have made it one more regular day, more than that with some caution, but it’s good that I’ll be able to top off sooner.)
Evening Rosary, settling in. We found Kevin had tried to call us through WeChat (but neither phone had rung), called him back. He and Susan talked for some time, with me throwing in occasional background comments.
As Susan was getting ready for bed, she contrived to drop her phone in such a way as to comprehensively crack the screen. So now she’s going to need to use my Kindle for practically all her reading. That’s going to shift the operational dynamic around here.
