Twentieth day in China – July 10 Thursday

It rained pretty much all day — quite heavily, at times — so Susan and I decided early to stay in. We let Mei‑li know about this, and she said she’d tell her father he didn’t need to include us in dinner.

We did our own meals in the apartment; in the very early evening I went downstairs for scouting, to see how much of the block I could navigate while staying under cover, which turned out to be less than I had anticipated. I came back with a couple of small burgers from the 7-Eleven.

(There were several people waiting to get on the elevator, back in our apartment building. Also people in the car needing to get out when it arrived, and the pattern of exit traffic meant I was the first person in the car. I held the door for the others; one of them, a young woman, said, “Thank you,” in English. She didn’t know what to do when I answered, “De nada.”)

Later in the evening, I got us a couple of McDonald’s meals. And that was basically all we did all day. Susan cross-stitched and watched movies she’s already seen multiple times; I read, from my Kindle and from my laptop.

Susan went to bed before 11:00PM. I plugged her wheelchair in to be recharging its power overnight, then took care of what I needed to make my own bedtime preparations.
