Some months back, Susan and I traded in our Honda CR-V for a Toyota Camry; the reason was that the Honda was an all-wheel drive, which couldn’t be towed except on a full trailer, and the idea was that we could buy a tow dolly for the Toyota, to pull behind our motorhome so Susan could ride with me. Still haven’t done so (though that may change soon, following what happened today), but most recently I’ve been focused on the fact that the vehicle came only with a dealer’s key. Today I contacted the local Toyota dealer to see about getting an electronic key fob made for the vehicle. I expected it to cost, but the price they quoted was about 25% higher than anticipated. As I do, I checked my bank account to be absolutely sure that the balance was high enough, with no surprises …

There was a surprise, yes. My date of military retirement was officially October of 2013, but it wasn’t actually recognized — following considerable efforts on my part — till last year, eleven years after the fact. And, as of yesterday, six years of the retirement pay I would have been drawing in the meantime, was deposited in my account.

I’ll be contacting Army retirement people to petition for the remainder (I was warned that six years was all that would normally be provided retroactively, but that I could request the balance), but the upper-five-figure amount that appeared will … be a welcome addition to what was already enough to keep us fairly well.

I also went on and got the electronic key fob made. So there’s that, too.
