About the whole ‘rockets’ thing …

Okay, that last post was a little abrupt. I gave an answer to the quiz-survey thingie, and I didn’t know it would manifest by posting on my own LJ.

Not trying to be dramatic, it’s just that the other night someone launched a rocket in our general direction, and I found out about it later because it landed without exploding, and when it was finally found — still undetonated — it had hit very near to an area where I spend quite a bit of time. Where, in fact, I would have been if I hadn’t been hanging around my quarters for a fire readiness inspection that didn’t happen because the personnel who would have been doing it were busy.

Busy accounting for everybody else in my unit. And allocating soldiers to try and help find the ROCKET that had smacked into the middle of where we live and work.

Aside from that, not a whole lot happening.

Third ‘combat’ deployment, and the trend still holds: the safest place for anybody is right next to me, because I always come out without harm or even any real inconvenience.

Oh, sure. Just remember: 1) I wasn’t there, 2) it came down without detonating, and 3) I have had things hit in my general neighborhood (years ago, but it happened) without doing more than alarm me slightly. I was just explaining about the “What worries you most right now?” “Rockets.” post that preceded this one.

Sometimes things like that happen - the one time there was a serious lab explosion at work, I missed it because I was away on a lab safety course...

I was aware of the irony when I used that phrasing. It’s true, though. My life is made up of boredom punctuated by moments of … of realizing that I could have been scared if I’d actually been anywhere near the thing that didn’t happen.

Similar to the emergency services, only without the bullets, and bombs, and being far away from home, and -- okay, not *that* similar. But I do recall times when I'd have been terrified, if I'd had time to think about it before it was all over. And for all of us there are those "there but for the grace of God go I" moments.

Believe me, this is minor. Minor. During my first rotation, we’d get three or four mortar shells dropped on us five nights out of every seven. This was just a reminder that, however much safer I am this time out, it’s still a WAR theater.
