I’m finally back home, to a lot of different kinds of news. One brother is divorcing; one, who was divorcing, is working on a reconciliation. My niece, who was living with her boyfriend (I very much oppose such things) will be marrying him in September. My stepsister who had moved to Florida is back. My daughter will be home in a month, and I’m trying to persuade her to accompany me to the next WriterCon; my son is already interested in going there, and I’m working on it.

My desire to go to the Defense Language Institute to study Arabic looks as if it may prove out after all; the things that have changed with my unit while I was gone apparently won’t have quite the effect I thought they would. I’ve just been notified that there’s a slot open for early October, and I’m on the fast track for it. That would be almost exactly what I was hoping to get, giving me four and a half months of time to rest up and relax, followed by entry into the program I’ve been wanting since I first heard of it.

And, finally, my ex-wife has agreed to go on an Alaskan cruise with me. My idea, and she agreed on the basis I offered it: we’ve both always wanted to do it, and I know I’ll enjoy it a lot more in friendly company. We’re making sure our kids understand this isn’t preliminary to a reconciliation; truthfully, there’s no way she would have agreed if I hadn’t let the reconciliation idea drop five or six years ago. Now that she doesn’t feel threatened, we get along just fine. And it will be strictly on a friendly basis, as she perfected the no-sex relationship while we were still married.

I’d also like to go skydiving; I’ve been wanting to do that for almost twenty-five years, just never got around to it. Maybe now.

In fic news, the White Knight Awards passed me by (I only had one story nominated), but many favorite people of mine were suitably honored. At Serenity on the Hellmouth, on the other hand, “Glass Ceiling” won for “Best Cordelia”, and “All Ye Who Enter” took 3rd Place for “Best Villain”, 2nd Place for “Best Angelus”, and Winner for “Best Joyce”. I am naturally happy and pleased.

I don’t know when I’ll try another story, I was in high gear for so long that it’s a relief to relax for a bit. Hopefully, within a few weeks I’ll be able to get with [livejournal.com profile] sroni on “Queen’s Gambit”. Aside from that, nothing on deck for the moment.

So... You're not happy unless you're in some sort of physical danger or what? :)

I hope you have fun, I could never do it, my fear of heights kinda makes sure of that.

Congrats on the awards.

Wow, that's a lot going on. The Alaska cruise is supposed to be fabulous. Everyone I know who's taken one raves about it. I'm glad you and your ex are friendly enough to do such things. When you have children in common nothing but pain can come from a adversarial relationship.

Congrats on the Serenity on the Hellmouth Awards. They are all well deserved. As prolific as you have been, no one can blame you for taking a breather.

So, are your kids in the fandom, or do they just want to see Atlanta? :)
