I was indeed aware that the system I was following was not recommended for most people, or even for me in most situations. It was an extreme action taken to meet extreme necessity.
No, age isn't the barrier. The problem, for me, comes with the effects of age on an already sub-optimal physique. I’ve gone a long way on sheer determination, but I can see that after a certain point even total dedication won’t be enough to compensate for mounting deficiencies. Others can do it — they started with a better set of personal equipment — but my own limits are fast approaching.
They just haven’t arrived yet. I have some good service left in me, and a little more is all I need.
