Wasn't it the armed forces that came up with SNAFU and FUBAR? I'm surprised that you were even expecting anything else. :-)
Had a similar thing happen in New Delhi once - the original flight was cancelled and so a group of us sat in the (filthy!) airport for 10 hours waiting for it to go. Only to be told by a stewardess wandering past that it was on the runway boarding now and why weren't we out there? We ran pell mell for the door only to have a machine gun waved at us by a guard who was clearly not happy with people running in HIS airport. Then when we finally got into the air the pilot turned around after an hour and went back because of bad weather at the destination! I gave up at that point.
