Well, not exactly “the life” yet; sort of a trial run before we get into retirement/RV living full-time.

December events

After leaving Carthage, MO, Susan and I went to Athens, TX, where I spent a week in the National RV Training Academy, learning the basics of RV maintenance and repair; they have programs to train for careers in that, but I just took the overview that would allow me to recognize and address the simplest and most common problems.

From there we went on to Conroe, TX, just outside of Houston, and spent three weeks there. I met and talked with a cousin I hadn’t had contact with in more than 50 years; Susan visited with one of her half-brothers — currently dealing with mild lymphoma, aftermath of Covid, and caught-early-and-promptly-treated pneumonia — and with a cousin she’d only previously met through Facebook.

Finally, on New Year’s Eve morning, we made the drive to San Antonio, where we’re staying at a KOA and planning to visit the River Walk … and maybe the Alamo, too, but I’ve been there before and wouldn’t feel cheated if we never got around to it this time.

In a bit over a week, we’ll head back to our former home state, where Susan will put in another two months filling in for the missing instructor. After that, down south again to somewhere warm (though the coldest months should already be past or nearly-past at that point), and we can work out how we’ll be addressing our long-term travels and pursuits.

This business of living a life of leisure is work.
