Continuing to play catch-up.

The second-biggest thing I haven’t mentioned over the past five months:

When Susan and I first moved into our current apartment, we did a one-year lease, since we intended to spend some time consolidating our affairs in preparation for our planned move overseas. By the time the lease was up for renewal, we already knew that plan would have to be deferred till things settled down pandemic-recoverywise, but that we’d still be leaving relatively soon for our launch into RV life.

When the renewal notice came, it had options for one-year renewal, six-month renewal, and maybe something else, with the final possibility being month-to-month pay-as-you-go. All the options included a substantial rent hike, but we chose the last one (which was also the most expensive) to allow for more flexibility when we were ready to leave, probably in October.

We paid for one month. When that was up, we paid for another month. Then, two days later, we got notice that we had to vacate by June 30th.

Annoying and inconvenient, but not a disaster. Finding another apartment on such short notice would be next to impossible, plus we’d probably have had to sign a lease there to get one at all. Our last-year’s experience, however — plus the knowledge that it would only be for a few months — meant we could just go back to the extended-stay hotel we’d used while the sale of our house was being finalized.

It’s already arranged. We’ve already been moving various possessions into storage, some of that done in preparation for downscaling to life in a motorhome. The final move-out takes place on the 30th itself. Annoying. Inconvenient. Potentially a breach of faith (why offer the month-to-month option if you’re not going to let people use it?). But we’ll go, and continue getting ready for the next big step.
