Fandom Snowflake Challenge #15

In your own space, create your own challenge. Send us off into the rest of the year by challenging us all to something new. Leave a comment here saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is one I never do well, and frequently opt out of. In checking what others have done, I see several that chose to pose new challenges for themselves, but that doesn’t seem to fit the frame of what was listed. So …

I’ve recently noted that entries on my LiveJournal friends page have gotten fewer and fewer. With a bit of reflection, that’s no surprise. I joined LJ in 2005, and added friends based on their activity in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom (which, only two years after the end of the series, was still large and active). The list gradually thinned as the fandom shrank, or as people shifted their interests to other fandoms. There was also a significant self-culling when LJ was bought out by a Russian company, and — let’s face it — 17 years is long enough for anybody who isn’t me to get tired of LJ or fan involvement, to get married or move to a different country or enter an entirely new phase of life. The basic result is that I’m getting regular posts now from only seven different sources; one of them is su_herald, and of the other six, only one ever posts about BtVS issues, and that not often. I simply haven’t paid close enough attention to adjust to the changes, and need to start doing that.

For those following these challenges, then, this is mine: if you’re a writer or poster in Buffy fandom, drop me a note here, and I’ll look to see about adding you to my friends-list. You’re reaching out, I’m reaching out … at this point in my life, that’s plenty of challenge.

And done for this year.

The surprise is that there still ARE so many people in Buffy-fandom. I just have to start paying attention to the ones that are there, because I can no longer rely on those who used to be my mainstays.
