Name three favorite characters to write.
As far as character use goes, I’ve featured Xander the most, with Giles and Buffy trailing him. Character voices, Giles comes easiest to me (and Wesley, and for some reason Spike, though I’ve actually done very, very little with Spike). That wasn’t the question, though, was it? My three favorite characters to write, in order:
VampHarmony. What can I say? The mix of sunny optimism, blithe brainlessness, and incompetence at trying to be evil (or alternatively trying to be not-evil, and just as inept at both) make her a hoot to write. She’s just funny, and that unique flavor of Harmony-ness elicits funny reactions from the people around her. Most prominently featured in “First Do No Harm”, but also appearances in “In Ev’ry Angle Greet” and “Tea and Oranges”, among other places.
Ethan Rayne. I don’t know why I enjoy doing Ethan as much as I do, especially considering that I haven’t really used him that much. Mostly, I think, it’s the way he takes so much pleasure from his life, especially that his life is as an irredeemable scoundrel (but with style!). Most prominent in “the Final Cut”, also seen in “Whisper of a Moment” and “Yet They Grind Exceeding Small” and elsewhere.
Willie the Snitch. Yeah, surprise, right? There’s just something about the guy, a way of turning a phrase, the fundamental weasiliness of him. He had some good lines in my first story, “Point of Focus”, and also features to good effect in “An Eye to the Future” and “Walking After Midnight”.
There are other examples I could name, and other fun characters, but those are the ones that come first to my memory.
Still to come:
