History and context, I would say, are important for a lot of things we don’t necessarily consider. And not always even in things that affect us directly; sometimes it’s a matter of better understanding something so you can have a more informed opinion.

An example that doesn’t necessarily pertain to anything (and may not even be accurate, but that’s how I saw it cited): some years ago I saw a note about the difference in approach by the USSR and Red China to legal control. According to what I read, if the Soviets didn’t want people to do something, they made a law against it, whereas the Chicoms made a general posting of all the things its citizens were allowed to do, and anything that wasn’t on that list was automatically forbidden.

Tiny difference in approach, huge difference in application. But you can’t appreciate the differences unless you’re aware of them.
