I really don’t know how oblivious Xander actually was (we never got to see inside his head), and it’s entirely possible that he accepted Buffy’s offer in hopes that it would eventually lead to something else. One may take it for granted, however, that he WAS oblivious to the pain it was causing her, or he would have behaved very differently.
Also, Xander had learned from Cordelia HOW to keep intimacy secret if the other party insisted, not that intimacy itself ‘should’ be hidden. (He wasn’t really happy with Cordelia over her insistence that involvement with him was a shame to be hid, and his support for Cordelia when she ‘came out’ at the end of “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” was both funny and nice.)
All told, I’m happy that the story seems to have worked. Thank you again.
