Reading the original before the remix is absolutely the way to go. It respects the source material, and much of the fun in a remix is seeing just how different can be two treatments of the same basic idea.
sunnyd_lite’s Xander was more forceful, and different enough that I didn’t really like him very much, and clearly the dominant in any Xander-Marcie partnership. Mine had Marcie in the more dominant role (though my Xander clearly gave as good as he got, albeit only on occasion). I enjoyed it, and apparently a few others have as well.
