My view of Xander’s nature came from the memory of his ‘invisibility’ in “Fear, Itself”: he couldn’t be seen, couldn’t be heard, and apparently couldn’t make his presence known in any way. His dependence on Marcie also helped lay the groundwork for the ending that the story wanted me to write, so these things reinforced each other.

Marcie’s relationship to Xander … well, it was definitely multi-layered, preserving some aspects of the combativeness from her invisible-girl-finale at SHS, and in other ways maintaining a pretense that there was nothing personal to it, with her just grabbing him for sex when she happened to be in the mood. Still, her automatically following him into the fight with the Sahrvin paralleled his jumping into the fight in the first place, a revelation of essential character for both of them.

Her readiness to shrug away the agency that had been running her, and go back to Sunnydale with Xander … that was supposed to be a surprise, at least a little. If it came across as jarring, I may have to look things over and tweak the narrative to make it less so.

As for interdependence, well: Xander is Xander, and Marcie is a paranormal female, so you just KNOW he was going to get involved with her in some way. I simply chose the way that seemed 1) to make the most sense, and 2) to be the most interesting.
