Ever since my first remix, I’ve noted that I almost always focus on, not How would I have written this story?, but Where would I have taken this idea? When I decided “When Xander Harris Was a Girl” would be the story I remixed … well, I don’t remember any point when I didn’t intend to have him with Angel Investigations. No decision, it was just there from the beginning. And, with that being so, I needed to give him a reason for leaving Sunnydale, and the changes in how his friends were treating him (with Willow’s spooky personal-space violations being the major one) seemed to provide adequate justification.
So, yes, that was the point of departure. I didn’t take the story this direction because I saw them reacting that way, though; I had them reacting that way so I could move the story where I wanted to.
That I enjoyed it as much as I did … well, that was just icing on the cake.
