Small excitement
Nov. 4th, 2024 07:39 pmWe got an unexpected tornado warning early this evening; well, we knew it could happen, and were watching for it, but we didn’t expect it. Since a motorhome offers only slightly more high wind protection than a cardboard box, Susan and I jumped into our car and went driving, hoping to either 1) move out of the path of any tornado that appeared — you can’t outrun them, but if they’re approaching from the north, you can go west — or 2) find a decent shelter. We didn’t see anything, but it was getting darker quickly (not a good sign), so we stopped at a Walmart Neighborhood Market. They were already closing down shopping and bringing in all the carts (getting possible projectiles out of the wind), but they allowed us to come in for shelter, and we were shown to the back in what was adjudged to be the safest area.
And, after about half an hour, the warning was lifted, and shopping resumed, and we bought a couple of items and went back home. There weren’t even any branches blown down. False alarms are good things.
(There actually were a couple of tornadoes, they just didn’t come anywhere near us. In our situation, you don’t take anything for granted.)
In four days we start for Arizona. Don’t expect to worry about tornadoes there.
And so it goes.
