Because no one is above the law.
Apr. 2nd, 2023 06:48 pmDuring the 2016 election cycle, Kristina Wong tweeted a ‘humorous’ meme saying, “Hey Trump supporters, skip poll lines and text in your vote.”
In the same election, Douglass Mackey (writing under the pen name Ricky Vaughn) posted a similar meme urging Hillary voters to “avoid the line and vote from home” by texting ‘Hillary’ to a certain number.
Wong is currently serving as an elected official on a neighborhood council in Los Angeles.
Mackey was charged with a felony, and on March 31, 2023, was convicted in the Eastern District of New York. He faces up to 10 years imprisonment.
Does anyone believe that a federal court in Los Angeles is more tolerant of ‘voter suppression’ than one in New York?
Does anyone believe that, if Wong had done this in New York, she would have had the same charges levied against her as were dropped on Mackey?
Two people. Same “crime” (which was, at worst, poor humor rather than a crime). But Mackey was actually convicted of a crime for which he was never officially charged: supporting the candidate disapproved of by prosecutors.
