My life has taken the oddest turn since I got back from deployment, though it may require an insider’s perspective to recognize it as odd. Back in 2004, on my return from Iraq, I only took a part-time job because I anticipated the assignment to language school which did, in fact, come about. Because of that, there was no regular job awaiting me when I came back from Afghanistan, and — since the odds of my going to the Defense Language Institute for a 17- to 19-month assignment are fairly good at this point — I’m satisfied for now to live off my savings. Because of those things, I have absolutely nothing to do during the day; yet, the day seems to somehow get filled anyhow. The difference is that I can’t necessarily describe exactly what it is that occupies my time.

Long and tedious details )

All right. Maybe you don’t actually have to be me to see how things got hectic even though I don’t have any statutory duties right now. It still feels funny to be so busy even though, theoretically speaking, all my time right now is free time.
