I spent September 11, 2002 talking with an Army recruiter. It would be another week and a half before I would be able to complete the process, and officially dedicate myself to destroying the enemies of the United States of America.

I spent September 11, 2003 in Iraq. By then I was in the Sunni Triangle. I watched always for an opportunity to destroy at least some of my country’s enemies, but the cowardly bastards always hid from me. (Of course, if they had tried to kill me directly, instead of safely lofting explosives at me from the other side of the horizon, I might have quickly lost my enthusiasm for the idea. But I never got the chance to find out, damn it.)

I spent September 11, 2004 at Fort Bragg, beginning a study of Persian Farsi in preparation for a seemingly inevitable confrontation with Iran which hasn’t yet materialized (but, I’m convinced, can’t be avoided). The demonic Iranian government is absolutely an enemy of America, but so far we haven’t dealt with it straight-on. I don’t know why.

Today I’m in Afghanistan. So far, still no immediate opportunity to destroy any of my nation’s enemies.

But I still hold out hope.
