Slow and steady wins the race …

Last night, after my duty day ended, I went back to my quarters, pulled out my notebook, and said to myself, Okay. Today’s the 1st, and RemixRedux won’t make its assignments until the 8th. That means I have a week to finish my current fic. If I only manage one page a day, that’s 2,800 words, which should be enough since I’m already on the last chapter.

And, thus reassured, I blasted out 2,200 words and finished the fic.

There will, of course, be several days of editing and proofing and minor rewrites. But I’m DONE, finished with my fortieth Buffyfic.

I saw your post, but I'm sorry, I can't. My schedule is just stuffed right now -- I barely have time to breath, and haven't written any fiction myself for most of the winter.

But you wouldn't want me, anyway -- I'd be too easy on you. I *hate* criticizing other writers, because I've always had a bit of a thin skin myself and I understand what they're going through. Some critics are too hard -- I'm not hard enough.

What about your daughter, if she's not too busy? She knows her way around good writing.

I’ve been getting some thematic feedback from her as I wrote the piece, and probably profited by it. However, 1) she basically learned writing from me, so our outlooks are sufficiently similar that I can’t be sure she’d spot any of my weak points, and 2) she’s somewhat in awe of me, both as a writer and as her progenitor, so I doubt I’d receive from her the slight ruthlessness I would desire.

I understand -- you wouldn't have received the ruthlessness from me, either. I've seen too much of that in my own life, including from more than one editor ....
