And, having seen the list, I feel a little dumb now for being surprised. I knew about Carter and Gore, and I’d heard about Arafat (long enough ago that it didn’t really stick with me), and of course the ridiculousness of Rigobertu Menchu … Seen all at once, the trend is clear, but I spent so long thinking of the Nobel Prize as a prestigious award, I simply hadn’t realized how thoroughly worthless it had been made by its custodians.
Obama could surprise me. He could turn out to be a great man. But he hasn’t done it yet — hasn’t done ANYTHING yet except talk big — so I was, yes, flabbergasted and appalled.
