And that was just the second episode, the completion of the two-episode series opener. It seems pretty clear to me that it was an accident (someone bumped Jesse into the stake Xander was holding), but just because Xander didn’t deliberately kill his former friend doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have, only that we don’t know. And he certainly committed himself fully in the future.
